Marine Wildlife

Dolphins and whales are not the only marine wildlife that we see throughout the year. We also see California Sea Lions on nearly every trip and sometimes Harbor Seals and large Elephant Seals. Do you know the difference between a seal and a sea lion? Learn how to tell them apart from our expert naturalists during your safari! We also see beautiful marine birds such as endangered Brown Pelicans, Cormorants, Blue Herons, Arctic Terns, and more.

Various species of sharks are seen at the surface from time to time, including Great White Sharks, Mako Sharks, Blue Sharks, Thresher Sharks, and Hammerhead Sharks. During our regular Dolphin & Whale Watching Safaris we have had very rare Basking Sharks, a filter feeder and the second largest living fish after the Whale Shark, swim right next to the boat!

Unique and rare wildlife are also observed including beautiful jellyfish, sea turtles, devil rays, and more. Did you know that Dana Point, California, is one of only a handful of locations in the world to have seen a Megamouth Shark?

During the summer months we frequently see Mola Mola, or Ocean Sunfish, a very funny-looking animal and the heaviest bony fish in the world. They can get up to 14 feet across!

Orange County has so many different types of wildlife, you never know what you may encounter during your whale watching trip. Every safari is different!
