Recognizing that these majestic creatures needed help, Gilmore began raising awareness by taking people out on boats to watch whales. Many people returned inspired. They refused to support commercial whaling, stopped buying whale-based products, and pressed for protective laws. Gray whales came back in larger populations in 1994 and were removed from the federal endangered species list. The Cave Store is also the only access point to the only California sea cave accessible by land. Just head down the old wooden stairs and enter the cave at the bottom. In La Jolla, you’ll have the chance to see docile and beautiful leopard sharks coming to the cove to breed. When you’re visiting, check local websites for beach closure information. The Children’s Pool (Casa Beach) is closed from December 15 to May 15 to protect the newly-born seal pups. The best viewing time is between Feb-April to view the love births of new seals in this area. Thanks to the phenomenon known as “synchronized reproduction” in which the animals breed, birth, and wean simultaneously, research shows that just about half of all sea lion births occur on June 15th.
