Beach Clean Up
Researchers now estimate that there are over 5 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean. A majority of those plastics start on land and find their way back to the water. By hosting beach clean ups, we are giving our community space to grow together as caretakers, while giving back to the beautiful and varied coastline that brings so much wildlife to our shores every year.
We began 2018 by hosting a beach clean-up at Salt Creek Beach. The event was a great success! We had the pleasure of working alongside 40 of our fantastic community members to clean up nearly 25 pounds of trash and debris from the beach in just over an hour and a half! Most of that debris came in the form of small plastics, Styrofoam, and partially degraded debris. These small, partially degraded bits of trash are devastating for wildlife as it integrates with their food source and leaks toxic chemicals into their living spaces.
We are proud to be part of this community of caretakers. After the success of this initial clean-up, we thought, “Why not more?” We’ll be hosting at least 4 beach clean-ups throughout the year to give everyone the opportunity to give back and win some fun prizes in the raffle we host at the end of the event!
