Whale watching passengers aboard Captain Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari out of Dana Point, California, received a special surprise in the form of a very rare pod of transient or Biggs killer whales! They followed the whales till they were above Newport Beach Harbor. Transient killer whales are known for praying on gray whale calves, sea lions, dolphins and other mammals. While so called resident killer whales feed on fish not mammals.

According to a friend of Capt. Dave’s, Alisa Schulman-Janiger who researches these animals, some orcas in this pod have been involved in gray whale kills in Monterey and some were seen near Dana Point last January, while other members of the pod have never been photographed off of Orange County before. Additionally there is a VERY new young calf with this group.
