Capt. Dave's Whale Watching Report

As seen weekly in the Dana Point News/Orange County Register

We had three days this week where not a single dolphin could be found. It was weird. We had a guest who came out with us twice during that unusual dry spell and they thought we were doing a bait and switch routine. Bait ‘em with dolphins and show them sea lions. Life is hard on the water when you can’t find the dolphins - it is a long day. But things got much better later in the week. We even had one trip on Saturday where we saw three different species: common dolphins, rissos, and the good old pacific whitesided were back in town. We saw some whitesided a few weeks ago but as usual they have been gone for most of the summer. We also saw bottlenose this week but no blue whales or Mola molas (ocean Sunfish).

We had several foggy days during the week. We often have fog in the transition months as the weather starts to cool down or heat up. In between summer and winter and then just before summer in May we get a lot of fog. The foggy days usually run in threes. Amazingly, we nearly always find the dolphins in the fog. I attribute this almost entirely to prayer, as it is often difficult to see more than a hundred yards and we simply stumble across these pods at much too high a success rate to be our own skill.

We are still seeing small scale red tide – when will it go away?

Our Disaster Relief Day went well, we had dolphins on both trips and even got some extra donations. Thank you to those who participated.

There are some interesting people and things going on in the harbor and in the coming weeks I will give you some of their stories.

Well guys that’s all there is there ain’t no more. Till next week. God bless you. Capt. Dave, over and out.
