New Year, New Trips to Help You Connect With Nature

Yes, we do!

This year we are introducing special safaris designed to help you experience nature in new and different ways.

These 2 and 1/2-hour trips will feature our award winning dolphin and whale watching experience aboard our catamarans, with an emphasis on connecting with nature.

Trips will also have a special guest speaker on board to help you futher understand the connection between better health and nature.

In 2017, we began reading extensive research studies that proved the incredibly powerful connection between purposeful exposure to nature and great health.

Some of the positive aspects include:

  • stress-free living
  • improved cognition
  • improved work performance
  • overall sense of well-being
  • good will towards others

These were things we had intrinsically known all along but it was exciting to see it confirmed with such overwhelming evidence.

Meet Author Richard Louv

Meet Author Richard Louv

A journalist and author of nine books including Last Child in the Woods, The Nature Priciple, and Vitamin N, Richard Louv is the authority on connecting children and nature. Translated into 17 languages and published in 24 countries, Richard’s insights have stimulated an international movement to connect children with the natural world.

He coined the term Nature Deficit Disorder in his first book on the subject of our disconnect with nature, Last Child in the Woods (2005).  Rather than getting bogged down by the digital age, Louv then offered up a hopeful new vision of the future in which our lives are as immersed in nature as they are in technology in The Nature Principle (2011) and followed it up with Vitamin N (2016) which gives you 500 actions to enrich the health and happiness of your family and community.

Louv is the co-founder and chairman emeritus of the Children & Nature Network, an organization designed to connect today and tomorrow’s children to the natural world. He has been awarded the Audubon Medal by the National Audubon Society, the Cox Award for 20017, the 2008 San Diego Zoological Society Conservation Medal, the 2008 George B. Rabb Conservation Medal from the Chicago Zoological Society, and the 2009 International Making Cities Livable Jane Jacobs Award.

In addition to being an international guest speaker, Louv is a Clemson University visiting professor, advisor to the Ford Foundation’s Leadership for a Changing World and the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child, serves on the board of directors of ecoAmerica, the editorial board of Ecopsychoogy, and a member of the Citistates Group.

A Prescription for Better Health

According to A Prescription for Better Health from the Harvard School of Medicine, there is an easy way to improve your health.

“Over all, research is showing that many vitamins, while necessary, don’t have such great disease-fighting powers…vitamin D may prove to be the exception. Epidemiological studies are suggesting it may have protective effects against everything from osteoporosis to cancer to depression to heart attacks and stroke.”

There’s an easy way to improve your health that we all forget about: Go Outside!

1. Get some Vitamin D: Sunlight is an amazing thing. In the ocean, when sunlight hits nutrient-rich water it kicks off an entire foodweb. When sunlight hits our skin, it jump-starts a process that creates vitamin D. Vitamin D is one of the rare vitamins that protects against everything from osteoporosis to cancer to depression to heart conditions.

2. Get Active: While you don’t need to be outside to be active, it certainly helps, especially for children. Being outside is a great way to get your body moving.

3. Exercise releases endorphins: We all know what Elle Woods has to say on the matter but now we have some medical degrees backing up her claim. When you add the benefits of exercise (it has been shown to relax and cheer people up) to the benefit of getting some sunlight, you have a recipe for a healthier life.

4. Concentrate very carefully: Being outside helps you concentrate.

5. A Room with a View: Researchers have found that patients who have a room with a view of something natural heal faster than those who view urban settings. Doctors recommend that patients with long-term hospital stays regularly open their windows and allow some natural light into their rooms for increased moral.

The Power of Nature: Ecotherapy and Awakening

The Power of Nature: Ecotherapy and Awakening explores the (then) burgeoning field of ecopsychology. First published in 2012, the articles talks about the benefits of walking in nature to help depression and anxiety. Author Steve Taylor Ph.D. asks the perfect question: Why is contact with nature so good for us? Taylor concludes that nature is calming and mind-quieting. He touches on a much debated subject by noting that it’s only in recent years that humankind if confined to man-made shelters. Other research suggests that we are evolutionarily designed to feel safer and calmer in open spaces where we have the ability to see a threat coming and flee if we need to.

What Can You Do?

Feeling anxious? Skip the retail therapy and grab some walkin’ shoes. Getting some “green exercise” will help you calm down and keep your wallet intact.

Richard Louv has become an authority on connecting children with nature simply by being bold enough to point out that most kids are not getting into nature nearly as much as their parents used to.

In this first part of his book, Louv introduces the idea of “Nature Deficit Disorder”. It’s not a medical diagnosis, but it is an observation of how disconnected from the natural world we are, children in particular. But as he says on page 36, “…we can become more aware of how blessed our children can be…through positive physical connection to nature.”

Think back to your favorite childhood memory of being outside. Is there a way for you to do that again and share it with one of your family, friends or children?

Nature and Your Mental Health

According to researchers at Stanford University, “Today, most people are experiencing significantly lower levels of daily contact with nature as compared to their parents’ generation. One study estimates that the typical American now spends nearly 90% of his or her life within buildings.”

The study aimed to get a more definitive answer on what nature does for our mental health by reviewing previous studies and synthesizing the results into one big result. The researchers conclude by proposing a system to categorize the benefits of different nature experiences as well as offering up some questions for future work. It’s a great read full of wonderful information about our need to be connected to nature and how nature reduces stress while increasing our attentiveness. Take your time to really work through this one…it’s long but so worth it!
